If you’re a people manager, you might look around at the bustling activity of your team and the looks of intense determination on their faces and assume that everyone understands how their work contributes to the company’s bottom line.

But you would be wrong. At least based on a recent Robert Half Management Resources survey, which found that only 47% of workers are able to make the connection between their day-to-day duties and how they impact the company’s financials.

Well that’s not so bad, you might be thinking.

OK, but let’s flip the statistic. What it really means is that 53% of your employees don’t understand how what they do on a daily basis is actually helping to improve or grow the company.

That lack of connecting information—of being able to see the link between daily activities and the bigger picture—can negatively impact employee engagement, satisfaction and even productivity.

“Employees who see the direct correlation between their contributions and company performance are more engaged, make better spending decisions, and can identify new ways to increase productivity and growth,” Tim Hird, executive director of Robert Half Management Resources, said upon release of the survey results.
